Sunrise in Vejer de la Frontera
The Costa de la Luz or "coast of light" is the real Andalusia, beautiful and untouched by the tourism that has spoilt the better known coasts of Spain. The coast looks across to Morocco and in clear evenings you can see the twinkling lights of Tangiers a short hop across the Strait of Gibraltar. The coast enjoys a superb quality of light hence it's name.
Located on the blue Atlantic ocean Barbate has a busy fishing port and a population of 22,000. Barbate has a long and beautiful beach stretching from the river inlet to the fishing port. The beach is overlooked by a promenade that contains plenty of friendly bars where escape from the sun can be sought. On a clear day one can clearly see the African coastline which is only some twenty five miles across the Atlantic Ocean. The town also has a small museum commemorating the battle of Trafalgar which took place on the 21st of October 1805. Cape Trafalgar itself is only a few miles up the coast and there will be activities at the cape this year to mark the battle's 200th anniversary.

One of the bedrooms
The accommodation is in private apartments that are located in a quiet part of Barbate and are only a three minute walk from the beach. Each apartment contains two or three bedrooms, kitchen, lounge and bathroom. The apartments provide a superb base for relaxing after the day’s excursion. Guests are allocated their own private bedroom with a shared bathroom. Some apartments also have a television or music equipment.
Breakfast is supplied in the apartments. Lunches are either delicious although simple picnics or traditional 'tapas' in local bars. Dinners are taken at a variety of quality restaurants, and are typical ‘Andaluz’ with superb meat and fish dishes being served. Vegetarians can be catered for with delicious pastas, pizzas and tortillas. The meals are accompanied by good Spanish wines, beers or soft drinks.

Barbate Town Square
For souvenir hunting the main shopping centre is only a few minutes walk away from the apartments. Many shops accept credit or debit cards and there are a number of banks that have cash dispensers. There is a small museum in the town that depicts Barbate's history. Barbate also has a lovely town square that has the town hall and the church at either side.
